The only thing I can think of would be if you took an awning like the Yakima SlimShady Awning # Y96VR and invert it to open towards the vehicle. Yep, the Kelty Waypoint awning will definitely work with a rooftop cargo box like the Thule Force XT L # TH6357B.
You'd have to lift up the back of the box for a second to quickly get the strap around the crossbar so you can tighten it, but that's it as far as getting it to work with a cargo box. This is 8 foot wide, has legs that would come down to the sides of the awning once extended and since it's wall mounted it would be the best option for your application above the rear door.
