Recommended Replacement Grease Seals for a Boat Trailer With BT8 Spindles

Updated 09/16/2024 | Published 08/26/2024

Question:

Hello, I have a boat trailer with a straight 1 inch spindle. What size of wheel bearing seals do I use? I have been using seals with an Inside diameter of 1.25 inch and outside diameter of 1.983. ON inspecting the seals I use their is a large gap, probably 0.25 inch, from the seal to the spindle since the shaft is inch. I have been using the 12192TB. Do the make a seal with a ID of 1 inch and an OD of 1.983? [email protected]

Hey Paul, it sounds like your boat trailer uses a BT8 spindle, so you can use the Double Lip Grease Seal # 34823. This seal has an inner diameter of 1.25" , an outer diameter of 1.98", and will work with BT8 spindles.

Hello, This is a 1 inch shaft not tapered so 1 inch the whole length of the shaft. SO I assume that it will not seal on the shaft but it will only make the seal on the outside of the seal that touches the back of the spindle? DO they make a seal that makes a seal on the outside of the spindle and at the shaft? Seem like this would be a better design for a marine application. I have had trouble the past year with only getting 100 miles or so out of the seal before they leak. I been using no name seals and wanted to switch to a branded seal. Who make the best seal? Last I looked the spindle was smooth. Thanks

@Paul Gotcha Paul, then it sounds like you might have a 3/4" straight spindle instead of a BT8 spindle. The BT8 spindle is a bit larger at 1 1/4" and is tapered, so with yours being slightly smaller and non-tapered this what I'm assuming you have. This spindle uses a different seal as well, the CE Smith Grease Seals # CE16305A, which has a 1" inner diameter and should fit your spindle without the gap.

@BryceD Good morning Bryce, The diameter of the shaft is 1 inch, the whole length of it. Would that be called a 1 inch spindle? The OD of the bore and the seals that fit the outside of the hub is 1.983 in. I do not think the Part Number: CE16305A will work. Do you have anything with the ID of 1 inch and the OD of 1.983 inch? Thanks
