Will A 6,000 lb Weight Distribution Hitch Work For A 2,000 lb Trailer?

Updated 08/29/2024 | Published 08/25/2024

Question:

I have a 6000 lb weight distribution hitch. Can I use it for a 4000 lb truck towing a 2000 lb bumper pull travel trailer.

Hey John. The answer to your question really depends on what specific weight distribution (WD) system you are using. Many WD systems specify a tongue weight range that the hitch will work with. For example, the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BXW0750 will work on trailers with a tongue weight between 550 and 750 lbs.

You will need to determine the tongue weight of your trailer and make sure it is within the specified range for your WD hitch. If you do not know your tongue weight, you can use a tongue weight scale like the Big Truck Big RV Tongue Weight Scale # BTBRV44FR. Most 6,000 lb WD hitches are going to be rated too high for a 2,000 lb trailer. If you can tell me the tongue weight of your trailer, as well as the model number of your WD hitch I can definitely shed more light on things.

Travel trailer has a tongue weight of 220 pounds so not in range for current hitch. I think a 6000 pound truck pulling a 2000 pound trailer with electric brakes would operate well without one as long as I keep my speed in safe range. Thanks

@Jnd Yes, a 6,000 lb system is going to be rated too high for your trailer. There will not be enough weight on the spring bars so you really would not see any results. I agree that you will probably be fine without a WD hitch since the trailer is so light. If the sway is bad, you can use a lighter rated system like the Blue Ox Sway Pro # BXW0350.

Found the max tongue weight at 600 pounds. I don’t think I would ever have 350 pounds of load in bed of truck ( behind the rear tires). Would this mean this hitch should not be used?

@Jnd What WD hitch are you using specifically? Different brands can have different weight ranges so I want to be sure I am giving you accurate info here. Do you know the brand and/or model number of your WD hitch?
