Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for Trailer with Dexter 2,000 lb Axles
Updated 04/23/2026 | Published 04/21/2026 >
Question:
Hello. I have a small travel trailer with a Dexter 2000 axle and a 3 leaf spring pack. The axle is mounted above the spring pack. Can I use the Hellwig EZ550 Helper Spring Kit on my trailer? I like to just beef up the suspension a little. Thanks for any info!!

Hey Duane, The Hellwig kit you referenced was designed for trucks and would not work for your trailer but we can still help. What you'd want instead is the SumoSprings kit part # TSS-106-40 which is for lighter duty trailers with underslung suspension setups like what you have. What do you haul with your trailer?

Thanks for the response! I've looked at the Sumo Springs and they are a bit more than I want to spend. What about if I just upgraded the leaf packs themselves with something like these: https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Leaf-Springs/Dexter/DX43CR.html?feed=npn?utm_source=listrak&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Listrak+-+Automated+-+Browse+&utm_id=l-id&utm_content=2024327&utm_term=automated-page-browse&trk_msg=CGCGS3QHS8JKPDIBNS5NPDCJVS&trk_contact=RHO5UDT1P8HG8MU7O02VH6EJ78&trk_module=bna&trk_sid=QRGSVTJC8U98F5DMP47TBTEHN4&trk_link=CKBUVB2O0TG45BUMG9CVPESHN4&utm_source=listrak&utm_medium=email&utm_term=SHOP+NOW&utm_campaign=em-trig-browse-prod-abandon&utm_content=browse-prod-m2 I'd be going from 2000# to 2500#. My rig is a small overland hybrid popup. Coachman Clipper Express 9.0TD. If the upgraded leaf packs are a better way to go I'll purchase them today. Thanks! Duane Dubay Plano, TX.
