Hello Charles, thanks for reaching out. Your do not necessarily need roof side rails in order to mount a cargo carrier basket. You do however, need to install crossbars on your roof for the basket. A roof rack with crossbars can be installed on vehicles with or without side rails, and we have roof racks for any roof style. I see that you were looking at parts for a 2017 Honda Pilot. For a 2017 Pilot with no existing side rails, I recommend the Rhino Rack ROC25 Roof Rack for Naked Roofs # RR73XR. This will allow you to mount a roof cargo basket, like the Thule Canyon XT # TH859XT you were looking at.
We made a video reviewing the Rhino Rack roof rack on a 2017 Honda Pilot, and you will find a link to the video below.

Hey Charles, how did things turn out with the Rhino-Rack roof rack and the Thule Canyon XT basket on your Pilot? Did the setup give you the space and stability you needed for your trips? Your update could make it easier for others working with a similar roof style.
