Can Trailer Have Weight Capacity Increased by Just Swapping Axles

Published 06/06/2024

Question:

I have a single axle trailer that I would like to increase the load on. Currently it has a 5 bolt single axle and my best guess the axle is a 3000-3500lb capacity. I would like to upgrade it to a 6 bolt somewhere around 5-6k capacity. what info would you need to make sure I dont go beyond what the trailer frame can handle and to make sure the axle, springs fit correctly. I also want to keep the same ride height.

Hey Artur, there isn't anything we can help with that will for sure enable you to carry more weight than the trailer was rated for. only solution would be to contact trailer manufacturer and see if there's a way that they can endorse. The axle is a huge part of the equation but you also have to factor in the wheels/tires, brakes (probably part of the axle), as well as the frame and coupler.

Its home built not rated in any way other then i know how mcuh weight a 5 bolt hub handles. No manufacturer to speack of. Also its kind of hard to swap the axle without swaping everething else so the brakes and tires is a mute point.

@Artur It's kind of unknowable then so you'd have to make your best judgment.
