Recommended Brake Controller and Adapter for a 2018 Ford F-150 w/ a Factory 4-Way

Published 05/20/2024

Question:

Question, can you guys decode a vin to tell me what I have to be able to hook up a brake controller for my 2018 f 150, I want to see if I can plug and play or if I have to do more. The truck has a 4 pin at the rear, no previous install that I can tell from previous owner for a trailer brake controller, it does have a rear hitch as well. Im just not sure what to look for on the truck to verify plug and play or a total wire up. Hope you guys can help.

We don't have a way to look it up but if that 4-way connector came with your 2018 Ford F-150 from the factory then you definitely have the brake controller port. It'll be located below your steering wheel behind the panel on the right. I have linked a video below and attached a picture that will help you find the brake controller plug.

I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller item # RED24FR. This is a proportional brake controller that activates your trailer's brakes when your F-150 decelerates. It has a 3-Axis accelerometer that measures deceleration in all directions for precise braking and smooth, uniform stopping action.

The Redarc item # RED24FR has a unique installation method where the only visible portion is the control knob that's about the size of a nickel. The main unit is hidden away inside your dash to be completely out of the way and out of sight.

Since your F-150 has the connector for a brake controller, you will want the Redarc Plug-and-Play Wiring Harness for Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers item # 331-TPH-007 to complete your installation.

You will also need the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness item # C56413. This will replace your 4-way connector with a 7-way so you can control your trailer's brakes.
