Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for a Flatbed Truck

Updated 04/14/2026 | Published 05/13/2024

Question:

2006 GMC 2500HD with a Eby big country aluminum flatbed. Im needing to mount a 5th wheel hitch to this. It has a well with trap door that measures 17 1/2inch x 16. Ground to deck of flatbed is 41. Truck frame to flatbed deck is 7 1/2. Any suggestions? We can modify and fab up about anything but would like to buy as much as possible to make it easier and faster. Thanks, Jeff

Hey Jeff, I'd recommend going with the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch for Flatbed Trucks # BWGNRK1500 which you can then use the B&W Companion Flatbed Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter # BWRVK3050.

Also, since your truck is has an aluminum bed, and this hitch gets welded to the bottom of the bed, you would just need to fabricate some kind of steel surface under the bed so the hitch could be welded to it.

The B&W Companion Gooseneck hitch is designed specifically to be used with flat beds and has a 30K capacity, which should be plenty for any trailer you're trying to pull.

Did you ever try the b and w fifth wheel on your bed? I have the same bed and wondering if it will work?

@Jason I know this setup will work, but the most challenging part will be fabricating the steel needed to properly mount and weld in the hitch, since you have an aluminum bed. Are you experienced with welding and fabrication? If not, I’d be happy to send over a dealer locator to help you with the install.
