Can 30 lb Propane Tank Be Connected to Big Buddy Propane Heater

Updated 12/05/2025 | Published 01/22/2024

Question:

I have a big buddy heater and I would like to see if it would be alright to use a 30ib tank when I bought it from Tractor supply I bought the filter and a 12foot hose. The person said that this is all I needed for it. I just want to know if I can hook up to a 30ib tank. I have had the heater for about 3 to 4 years. Thanks

Yes, you can use a larger 30 lb propane tank with your Big Buddy Heater. Just be sure you're still using your regulator so the propane pressure is lowered to best suit your heater, and your hose has a Type 1 connector on one end like what we see with the MB Sturgis Propane Pigtail w/ Back Check # 100833-24.

If you aren't sure about the connections you have then please feel free to shoot me some photos and I'll be more than happy to help you out!

Jon, When you say be sure you are using your regulator, do you mean have an inline regulator or does the Big Buddy heater have a built in regulator? When I had it connected to my 20 pound cylinder, I just used the hose and no regulator in the line.

@DonaldH The only difference between a 20 lb propane tank and a 30 lb tank is the size, so as long as you use the same parts you used with your 20 lb tank you'll be good to go! Your Big Buddy heater probably has a regulator built into it if you're only connecting a hose to the tank.

Why is the buddy heater leaking at the hookup? At the tank , a bad seal or something

@ByronC It could be due to a few different things. A bad O ring gasket, damaged hose or regulator, debris in the valve or even just cold weather causing moisture issues. When did you start noticing this issue?
