Recommended Air Conditioner System For A School Bus

Published 09/21/2023

Question:

With the Advent Air RV Air Conditioner - 13,500 Btu - Black Item # ACM135B, it states that it is not approved for school buses. I have two questions. 1 Can you tell me why they are not approved and 2 Do you have any units that would be approved? Thank you. I appreciate the help.

Advent Air only provides a warranty for their units if installed on an RV because people try to install these units on enclosed trailers, school buses, etc. that aren't rated for the weight of the unit or flat enough to fit correctly, causing issues with performance of the unit and overall safety. It's just easier and safer legally to only allow use on RV's.

Furrion doesn't have this stipulation, but does list that you must have a thick enough roof (3.5" to 6") and that it can support the weight of the unit. This may mean that you need to frame in the area that you're placing the unit and thicken up the opening with some plywood or metal to have enough space for the air distribution box to sit correctly.

Since this would be on a bus you'll most likely not want to run a wire for a wall thermostat so you can go with an option like the Furrion Chill HE RV Air Conditioner System # FR52PR where the controls are on the air distribution box.
