Can You Just Replace the Latch/Yoke on an Old A-Frame Trailer
Updated 03/07/2023 | Published 03/05/2023 >
Question:
Hello. I’m looking at replacing my yoke latch on an old trailer… it looks like there aren’t any kits to fix the latch. Is it common to weld on a new coupler over the exiting a frame coupler? Or would you have to remove the old coupler or grind it down before installing a new coupler? Thanks!

I do have an option for you but replacing the latch/yoke on an old coupler is not really possible for the vast majority of couplers. If the latch or yoke are broken or worn you'd need to replace the entire coupler. Unfortunately, this means grinding off the old coupler and welding a new one on. That said, I do have an option for you that will make this easer as it bypasses welding since it bolts to the frame once a few holes are drilled. I recommend the Demco A-Frame Trailer Coupler part # DM14793-81 which features a bolt-on install and uses a very simple latching mechanism.
Please note, the old coupler will need to be completely removed prior to installation.
