Fitting Instructions for Yakima FullBack 3 Bike Rack on 2021 Chrysler Pacifica

Question:
The instructions say to use the top straps in anchor mode, threading the strap over to top of the hatch. The top edge of my hatch is an inch wide piece of steel ideal for attaching the strap. Using the anchor mode doesnt seem to add much as it will go over this steel piece . The anchor seems mainly to put pressure on the inside of the hatch and the frame before exiting over the steel.

The instructions for the Yakima FullBack 3 Bike Rack part # Y02633 are generic and not specific to any one particular vehicle. That said, they do offer vehicle specific fit notes on their website for a 2021 Chrysler Pacifica and I looked these up for you.
Measurements:
- Bumper or Hatch to Base Pad 14"
- Hub Setting 4
Notes:
- Outer/lower support frame rests on the upper portion of the license plate.
- Place the lower strap hooks at the bottom edge of the trunk, hatch lid, or rear door.
- Do not use rear wiper when carrier is installed.
- Yakima Hangout 2 trunk mounted rack max load of 60lbs. 30 lbs per bike. Yakima HalfBack 2 and FullBack 2 trunk mounted racks max load of 75lbs, 35 lbs per bike. Yakima 3 bike trunk mounted racks weight limit for 2 bikes is 60 lbs and 3 bikes is 90 lbs.
- For this vehicle; Yakima Halfback, Fullback, and Hangout products require that the upper hooks must be changed and installed in anchor mode. See instructions for anchor mode implementation.
- The headliner and or trunk liner on this vehicle may deform or be damaged under prolonged contact with this rack in anchor mode. Yakima Halfback, Fullback, and Hangout products require this rack installed in anchor mode.
It does look like Yakima recommends using the upper straps in anchor mode as this is what they determined to work best for this vehicle in their testing so that is what I must recommend as well. If you wish to install the upper straps using the standard hooks you would be going against the instructions therefore voiding any warranties of the rack. In my experience, the anchor mode is used when the section the hook would normally attach to is either glass or the support structure around the glass is not sufficient.
