How Weight Distribution System Works On a 2021 Toyota Tundra
Published 11/15/2022 >
Question:
Our new trailer has a dry tongue weight of 800lbs, and a carrying capacity or 2500 lbs. Most the storage is in front of the axles so the tongue weight will increase. My tundra has a hitch rating of 500 lbs tongue unless you use a weight distributing hitch. Does that mean the the weight distributing hitch has to support everything over 500 lbs? Thanks

Expert Reply:
The weight distribution system will help disperse the tongue weight of the trailer across both axles of the vehicle. It's not responsible for supporting all of the trailer's weight nor does it take all of this away from the trailer hitch on the tow vehicle. It does however lessen the load on the trailer hitch hence why the capacity of the hitch increases when used. I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System with 4-Point Sway Control part # EQ37120ET which will give you plenty of room for error and it's one of the best systems on the market as far as sway control goes. It also comes with everything you need so once you get setup you're ready to go.
