How to Convert a Trailer w/ Surge Brakes to Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes

Question:

I have a boat trailer with surge brakes on it. They haven’t worked in awhile im wanting to convert it to electric. The trailer has 2 axles both with disc brakes. My truck already has a controller. What will I need to make this happen? Thanks

To convert surge brakes to an electric over hydraulic braking system you will need an electric over hydraulic actuator and a compatible brake controller.

For an electric over hydraulic actuator that works with disc brakes, I recommend the Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator for Disc Brakes item # K71-651. I have linked an installation video below.

You will need a brake controller that is compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes. If yours isn't then I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller item # 90195. This is a proportional brake controller that is easy to use. If you would like to email me your vehicles year, make, model, and whether or not it has a tow package I can see if there is a plug in adapter.

The last part that you will want to look at is the actuator that is currently on the trailer. Since your trailer has surge brakes, then it likely has an actuating coupler. Since the coupler will no longer need to be actuated, I recommend locking out the coupler or replacing the it with a standard coupler.
