Question:
I have a 2017 Nissan Frontier with no rack or rails, smooth top. I need crossbars that give me flexibility to haul canoes, install V-bars for surfskis, etc. I dont mind drilling the roof to install good rails, but if rails install in rain channels, are they really secure? What are your options Im confused looking at search results. Thanks

The roof rack systems that attach to the door jam / gutter of your vehicle are actually very reliable and sturdy. This is a common setup and I am confident you won't have issues with this mounting style; and this way you won't be drilling into the roof of a newer vehicle.
For your 2017 Nissan Frontier with naked roof, I recommend going with Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars 54" # RRVA137B-2 and Mounting Legs # RRRLKVA. These crossbars are aerodynamic which means less wind noise than other styles, and they have a T-slot channel on top which accepts various accessories. You will also need a Fit Kit to attach the roof rack to your naked roof; use # DK108 for Crew Cab models and use # DK374 for King Cab models.
If you don't have carriers yet for your canoe and skis, then I would look into the Malone BigFoot Pro Canoe Carrier with Tie-Downs # MPG112MD for the canoe and the Rhino-Rack Ski and Fishing Rod Carrier # RR572 for the skis. I attached a few demonstration videos for you to check out.
