How to Install Yakima SkyBox 16 Roof Cargo Box on Yakima HD Crossbars

Question:

I read a previous QandA post in which it stated that all of the Yakima Skybox units were compatible with the HD crossbar. Does this include the SkyBox 16 Carbonite with the internal clamps? I am asking because I am unable to get the clamps to on my unit to close one it is installed. I am wondering if there is an additional piece I need to lengthen the clamp?

The Yakima SkyBox 16 Roof Cargo Box # Y07335 is a bit tricky to install on the Yakima HD bars but they will work together - which has been confirmed by my contact at Yakima.

To get the SkyBox system to install on the HD bars you need to open the clamps up as far as they will go without the barrel nut dropping out (which is the hard part). Once the clamps are opened you will seat the box on the bars being sure the bars are in the middle of the clamp assembly. From there you will tighten down the clamping system as tight as you can get it. It's important to note the jaws won't completely close around the bars and that's okay - it's actually how the system was designed to work. As long as you get the clamps as tight as you can and the box doesn't shift around when you shake it by hand you'll be good to go!
