How to Stop Corrosion in The 7-Way RV Style Connector
Question:
I have a 7 way connector which is mounted in the box of my truck under my toneau cover so it is protected from the weather. I have to replace it every year cause it corrodes. I use a hopkins connector. All the brass coated connectors corrode. Is there any way to correct the problem. Or do you have any hints or tips to help with this reaccuring problem.

Your best bet to eliminate corrosion in your 7-way connector is to use some Dielectric Grease for Electrical Connectors, item # 11755. Use this on the wiring connectors inside the connector when installing the connector and occasionally on the connection between the truck and trailer and your corrosion issues will be behind you. The corrosion you are experiencing is from moisture in the air and is prevelent with the RV connectors. The presence of constant 12 volt power creates an atmosphere that is prime for corrosion.
We have 7-way connectors (see links) and all say that they are corrosion resistant, I would recommend the Hopkins Endurance 7-Way Trailer Connector Socket, item # HM48480, if you only need the 7-Way connection, and the Hopkins Endurance Multi-Tow 7-, 5- and 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector, item # HM48470, if you tow trailers with different styles of connectors. The Pollak Black Plastic, 7-Pole, RV-Style Trailer Socket, item # PK12-707E, is also a quality connector.
