Question:
I have a 2006 F150 with a 5.4L gas engine and the CST. Along with the programs it allows me to monitor temperature for a number of areas. When towing, which are the key temperatures to monitor and what are the upper control limits? Thanks

The key temperatures to monitor when towing are the transmission fluid, engine oil and coolant temperatures. Each of these fluids will have different ranges that you will want to stay within.
For transmission fluid, the ideal operating temperature is between 160 and 200 degrees. If you find that you are running over 200 degrees, I would recommend installing a supplemental transmission cooler, like part # D13504, if you do not already have one. I also recommend using the Ford radiator adapter fittings, # D13025.
Engine oil and coolant temperature ranges can vary depending on the conditions and, after doing some additional research, they can also vary between trucks. Typically, you would not want to see these exceed 210 degrees, but some Ford owners have seen temperatures as high as 230 degrees without any issues. Of course, towing uphill in the summer will result in a higher oil or coolant temperature when compared to towing in the winter.
If you find that your coolant and engine oil are running high as well, you can install an engine oil cooler like part # D15605, and an electric radiator fan like part # D18916. You can also install a thermostat that will automatically turn the fan on when the temperature reaches 180 degrees.
