Can Rhino-Rack Ski and Snowboard Carrier Be Stolen Off Roof Rack

Updated 06/10/2024 | Published 02/07/2022

Question:

Re Rhino ski racks when on cross bar with universal mount, and locked, can entire rack be taken off, or must you unlock first re theft? How easy or difficult is it to mount or dismount from crossbars with universal mount? Can I easily and quickly attach or is screwdriver, pliers needed? Thanks.

Helpful Expert Reply:

The Rhino-Rack Ski and Snowboard Carrier part # RR574 is secured to the crossbars using security hex bolts. It requires a special security tool that Rhino-Rack provides to install and remove. In other words, someone would have to have this special tool to remove the carrier from the rack or the rack from the vehicle. Therefore, theft is unlikely and does not require a lock/key.

As Rhino Racks have selected to attached these carriers to the roof rack with hex bolts that are freely accessible should provide you with an idea of the security. If the hex bolt size is a standard size found on any set of hex keys and used by almost anyone (including most / all people at ski hills) then let that provide you a judgement of how easily it would be to remove the entire carrier, skis included. Thule hides the mounting hardware behind the locking mechanism requiring any thief to deal with the lock first (all be it a waffer lock).
