Question:

I appreciate your help. If I choose to put a bike hitch on my 2014 toyota Prius C instead, which bike trailer would you recommend? I spoke to the guy that's going to be installing the hitch & he says I have to get a class 1. I'll be transporting 2 regular thick tire bikes. Which 1 do you recommend? What do you think of the bike hitches that hang off the spare tires?

I do have a solution for you. It can be handled by replacing your ball mount with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class II - 1-1/4", part # C12181. This hitch receiver has a maximum tongue weight of 300 lbs and a maximum gross trailer weight of 3,500 lbs. Once this hitch receiver is in place, my hitch bike recommendation is the Hollywood Racks Trail Rider Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Frame Mount, part # HR200Z. The reason you will have to go with a new hitch receiver is because your ball mount is built into the hitch and it is not removable. A hitch rack is also more secure than a spare tire bike rack.

You will be able to carry your bikes on your 2014 Toyota Prius C, provided that they are not very heavy bikes. My hitch receiver recommendation is the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4", part # 24971. The tongue weight of this hitch receiver is 200 lbs. Please keep in mind that your vehicle is not rated for towing. My recommended hitch bike rack is the Hollywood Racks Trail Rider Bike Rack for 2 Fat Bikes - 1-1/4"/2" Hitches - Frame Mount, part # HR200Z-FB. The Hollywood Racks Trail Rider will fit your 1-1/4" hitch receiver and it is fat tire compatible, so your thick bike tires will not be a problem. This rack does have a 45 lbs weight limit per bike and it weighs 38 lbs, keeping you safely under the 200 lbs tongue weight of your hitch receiver. If your bikes are heavier than 45 lbs, you can always go with the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches, part # HLY74FR. This hitch bike rack has a weight limit of 80 lbs per bike and it weighs 54 lbs, leaving you 146 lbs for bike weight.
