Recommended Heavy Duty Trailer Hitch For A 2010 Coachmen Freelander 32BH

Question:

Im looking to purchase a 2010 Coachman freelander 32BH Class c Motorhome. I would like to upgrade the hitch to bigger then 5,000lbs. Do you have a bolt on 8,000 or 10,000 hitch that would fit this? Thank you so much for your time. Casey

We do have much heavier duty weld on hitches available, like the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame # 41991 that can be paired with the 7" Weld-On Bracket Kit # 4907 or 16" Weld-On Bracket Kit # 4916, but there will not be a bolt on option available. It should also be noted that your 2010 Coachmen Freelander 32BH motorhome is rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, so you should not exceed this amount.

If you still wanted to get something heavier though, the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame # 41991 will be the best option. The hitch is rated up to 16,000 pounds towing, again limited to 5,000 due to your vehicle, and will be a lot more robust than the hitch you currently have. It also retains the 2" receiver so you will not need a reducer or anything like that. The 7" Brackets # 4907 will most likely be what you will need for the clearance.

Care to explain that the same exact chassis, drivetrain and engine just 4yrs newer can tow 7500lbs? If the GVWR is 14,500 and the GCWR IS 22,000 I don’t see why it’s a problem upgrading the hitch. Am I wrong?

@JoshB Unfortunately this is not something I can really comment on. These weight ratings/restrictions are designated by the manufacturer of either the frame/chassis and or the RV body manufacturer. All the info we here at etrailer have is the same info that can be found by anyone in an owner's manual or manufacturer's website. Believe me, I wish we had something that gave us more info about why things are the way they are, but alas, we do not. All that said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with upgrading the hitch to one that is more robust. It cannot hurt anything. Just be aware that doing so will not upgrade the towing capacity, as stated in the original answer for Casey. You are always limited by the lowest rated component. Long story short, you are not wrong.
