Question:

Is there a way to secure this in the open position to prevent pranksters from folding it closed over the door meaning we have to climb out the emergency exit to get out of our trailer in the morning?

That is a pretty cruel prank someone could pull, and dangerous. You would need to either prevent the handle from being folded towards the door by blocking the path or secure the handle so it sticks out all the time. Since you would need to fold it in while traveling, the first method is the way to go.

You would do something as simple as inserting a small screw or something else adjacent to where the handle pivots on the door side so it cannot be put in that location. I have incldued a picture that should explain it a little better.

Or you could go with something a little more low profile like # GH12-713 or # AH-150 which are fixed handles.
