Question:
The integrated trailer brake system is not working and I get a service trailer brake system warning on the dic with or without a trailer connected. Ive replaced all the components. The ITBC, the other part relay maybe next to the ITBC and the board inside the controller in the dash. Ive checked all the wiring, replaced the 7 way plug on the bumper and still the same thing. Any suggestions? Also, if I go with an aftermarket brake controller: 1. Which one do you recommend? 2. Will the dic still display the service trailer brake system? 3. Will I have to run all new wires or will the aftermarket controller plug in under the dash?

Other than there being an issue with the controller itself, you may want to check the towing fuses to male sure they are all still good. I included a picture of the fuse box under your hood and the fuses you will need to make sure are good, but it is really just fuse number 6 that handles the brake controller. If this is good, you will need to take your truck to an auto shop or dealer to have diagnosed, unfortunately.
As to an aftermarket controller, you will need to run one new wire from the blue brake output wire from the controller to the 7 Way, but this is it. There is a bundle under your dash that should have little tags telling you which one handles which function for the other 3 wires. These will need to be connected to the bare wires on the back of a controller and you will be good to go. The Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR is also one I highly recommend as it can handle up to 6 brake assemblies and can work with electric or electric-over-hydraulic trailer brakes. This will also have one of the cleanest looks once installed as only the adjustment/manual override knob will be visible.
I am honestly not sure if adding a controller like this will clear the DIC display though. I did include an article that will help with the install and answer any other question you might have, but if the error doesn't go away, you may have to have a Chevy dealer clear the code.
