Replacing Hubs On a 4' X 6' Carry On Trailer From 4 on 4" Lugs to 5 on 4-1/2" Lug Pattern 15" Wheels

Published 10/22/2021

Question:

I have a 4 X 6 Carry On trailer with 4 bolt hubs. I would like to change the hubs to 5 bolt to allow 15inch wheels and tires. I am removing and replacing the fenders to facilitate the larger size. I am NOT looking to increase capacity, just get a better ride and use existing 15inch wheels I already have. Are there hubs available that will just swap out the existing to allow this? Thanks for any help or advice you can give me.

Your current axle on your 4' X 6' Carry on Trailer will likely have either a BT8 Spindle # TRU59FR or BTR Spindle # TRU44FR. You can determine the spindle by removing your current hub and inspecting the bearings or by measuring the spindle itself. I have included a image that shows the locations of the bearing numbers and grease seals on your current hub as well as the measurement points for spindle as well.

The BT8 Spindle # TRU59FR uses Bearings # L44643 which have an inner diameter of 1". The Grease Seal # 34823 has an inner diameter of 1.25". If these are what you have then the Easy Grease Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-1K is your replacement idler hub.

The BTR Spindle # TRU44FR uses Bearings # L44649 which have an inner diameter of 1.063". The Grease Seal # 10-9 has an inner diameter of 1.5". If these match what you have the Easy Grease Trailer Idler Hub # AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-2K is your replacement idler hub.

Both hub assemblies come with bearings, races, and grease seal installed and packed with grease for a simple installation. If you find that your hub has different bearings or measurements on any of the components please let me know what parts you have and I can find you the correct parts. Also I assumed your 15" wheels are using the 5 on 4-1/2" lug pattern if yours are something different let me know.
