Will The 50amp Hughes Autoformer Voltage Booster/Surge Protector Work On 30amp Service Pedestals

Updated 08/09/2024 | Published 10/16/2021

Question:

I have a 50 amp service on my trailer. If Im at a park that only has 120V/30A or 120V/20A service will this autoformer work?

Since you're using a 30amp pedestal the Hughes Autoformer Voltage Booster with Surge Protection - 50 Amp # HU57FR isn't going to boost that power to 50amp. The booster is meant to give you steady service so that you don't experience a voltage drop. For example if it's the middle of August and everyone at the campground has their AC units kick on at the same time it could pull too much from the campground and you and others would experience a voltage drop and surge which could potentially damaged your equipment. This product will help eliminate that voltage drop and in the event of a surge will sacrifice itself to protect your camper. It has replaceable Surge Modules # HU26FR so that you don't have to completely replace the unit every time you experience a surge.

Since you have a 50amp service camper you will want to match your camper and use a 50amp Autoformer and then use a 50amp to 30amp adapter like # CAM55185 between the # HU57FR and the 30amp power pedestal.

Hey Kevin, if I have a 50AMP Autoformer and a 30AMP RV, as long as I have the 30/50 adapters, with the autoformer still boost the voltage coming from the pedestal? (Or I could rewire the 50amp autoformer for 30 amp plugs)

@PaulS You wouldn't be able to use the 50amp surge protector with a 30 amp system. The surge protector always needs to match the amperage of the trailer. The manufacturer has stated in the past that you can use an adapter to go from 50 amps down to 30 amps using an adapter but the surge protector's rating still has to match the trailer to function correctly. I recommend selling the 50 amp surge protector and picking up the 30 amp # HU67FR.
