Updated 11/17/2025 | Published 12/31/2024

Question:

I ordered one of these from you, but theres no technical documentation ANYWHERE! Which side is the input and which is the output? Why not show what the terminal says look like?

Hey Dave!

The input for the 50A Power Watchdog Surge Protector # HU82VR is at the bottom while the output is at the top. I'm attaching a clip from the instructions on Hughes site so you can see the correct orientation.

I've requested for the instructions to be added to the product page as well, and I'll send a link to you in a separate email so you have it.

Hey Dave, were you able to confirm the input and output orientation on your Power Watchdog surge protector after checking the Hughes instructions? Knowing what worked could help others setting up the same unit.

@JonG Yes, input terminals are on the bottom. Also, people should be aware that the plastic stops behind the terminals (that are supposed to keep the cable from being inserted too far) are VERY easy to break (because 6 AWG wire is pretty stiff, and depending on the situation it may not be easy to realize how much pressure is being applied against them when all you're trying to do is make sure the cables are fully inserted before tightening the terminals). If the plastic stops break, you may not realize it and they can actually interfere with the operation of the contacts in the contactor, and (as we experienced), prevent one power leg from passing through. Hughes technical support was great, but we actually went through three of these units before we figured out what was happening.
