Can a 50A RV be Plugged Into 20A or 30A Power?

Updated 08/12/2025 | Published 08/05/2025

Question:

I usual go with Progressive for the bypass ability when I dont have 50 amp and only 20 amp or 30 amp. Can I still hook up with lower amp temporary setup?

Hey Mike, thanks for reaching out!

I'm not quite sure what product you're referring to, but if you're talking about having a 50A RV and hooking it up to a 20A or 30A power source, you definitely can do that with the Power Watchdog # HU82VR. You'll just have to be more diligent about making sure you don't exceed those amps otherwise you're looking at a power failure.

What parts are you using to hook up to the lower amp pedestal?

No Jon I understand the concerns. Many thanks. In the past I have had a Progressive Industries surge protector and it comes with a bypass for lower amp service. Understanding the amp draw concern does the surge protector allow pass through or does the app have a control that allows the lower amp to pass through?

@Mike I reached out to Hughes directly and they confirmed what I said. There isn't an override setting, but that's because the amount of amps being pulled in will basically be put on you to keep track of. Here is their direct response to my email to them: "Yes, you can use adapters just fine. Voltage is supplied from the grid/park, you want 120V ideally. Amperage is on the user, you turn things on, you draw more amps. You dont have anything running/on you are drawing zero amps, even though you are connected. You will always be limited by the lower number and/or the source."
