Will Heavier Spring Bars Decrease Trailer Porpoising

Updated 10/13/2021 | Published 10/12/2021

Question:

We have the Sway Pro with 750 pound bars and are experiencing some porpoising. Our tongue weight is about 660 pounds, and we dont put much behind the rear axle besides the Sway Pro which is about 70 pounds. Would moving up to the 1,000 lb. bars help with the porpoising or would it make the ride unnecessarily rough?

Expert Reply:

If the trailer does not have enough weight on the tongue relative to the weight of the trailer (ideally between 10-15%) then you can experience issues with porpoising. A weight distribution system will generally fix most porpoising issues as it helps better distribute the load more evenly but if the springs bars are too weak they can flex more and give in to porpoising. The best solution would be to rearrange weight on the trailer but stiffer springs bars would also help to alleviate some of the porpoising issues. This however comes at a cost as heavier rated spring bars will ride stiffer but I don't think 1,000 lb spring bars on a trailer with 600-700 lb tongue weight is too much.

The Replacement Spring Bars for Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System part # BXW4007 are the correct 1,000 lb spring bars for the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System but I have attached all our entire spring bar options below as well.
