Will Using Load Range G Tires Have a Rougher Ride Than Load Range E Of The Same Size?

Updated 08/26/2021 | Published 08/20/2021

Question:

Hello, I have a 2007 Montana 3400RL 5th wheel. Total gvw is about 14000# loaded. I have always had E rated tires on it and kept them at 80psi. I once had a blow out in hor temps but the tires were 5 yrs old. I yry and change them about every 4 yrs. We are anout to take a 4500 mile trip and I am again going to replace them. Considering F or G rated tires but dont want the unit to ride any rougher. Do you have to run the heavier tires at maximum psi or can you safely reduce that some in order to get a comparable ride? Thanks

The Provider ST235/80R16 # PRG80235 in the load range G will have a stiffer sidewall than that of the # TTWTRTM2358016E in load range E. This will cause them to have rougher ride and more bouncing as the tires will not absorb the shock if you are using them when only a load range E tire is required.

It is important to use the correct load range for the trailer and the equipment that you will be using on the trailer. If you lower your tire rating you must remember that it will lower the capabilities of the trailer. And by using a higher load range you are still limited to the manufacturers specifications listed as the axles, wheels and frame construction are often matched to the manufacturers specifications for that trailer.

Taskmaster who is the manufacturer of these Provider Tires says to always operate their tires at the manufacturers maximum PSI rating during use. Using anything other than the manufacturer specifications for tire pressure will void any tire warranty with that manufacturer. The only tires manufacturer that I know to currently allow for various different tire pressures is Goodyear and they only have a load range E tire in your size.
