Updated 07/03/2024 | Published 06/28/2021

Question:

I have 5100 lb Dexter axles on my Coachmen 5th wheel - can you let me know the correct bearing components? A photo of the axle sticker is attached. Thanks!

I was unable to find any information with the numbers on your axle, unfortunately. However, you can contact the manufacturer of the trailer and they should be able to tell you exactly which inner and outer bearings you have.

If for some reason they can't, you will need to pull off one of the hubs. Once it is off, you will need to measure the inner diameters of both your inner and outer bearing. This should be done with calipers as it does need to be as precise as possible. There can also be numbers on the bearings themselves, but these can wear off over time.

The # BK3-300 may be the correct one for your axle, but with it having a 5,100 pound capacity, it is a little odd. With that being said, it is definitely a good idea to double check, just to make sure.

Lazer, Is there any update about the dexter 5100lb axle? I also have these axles on a 2019 coachman freedom express blast 271bl. I had a magnet go bad and I'm trying to figure out what I need. I'm pretty sure it will be the same magnet as a 5200/7000lb axle. I have 12 in drums (I'd bet all 12 in drums use the same magnet). Searching the internet, this post by Roger is the only mention of a dexter 5100lb axle (dexter doesn't even mention it). I've contact dexter also, I'm just waiting on a response. thanks, Mike

@MikeB Though I never did hear back from Dexter about the proper bearing for a 5,100 pound axle, the brakes are a lot easier to deal with. You are absolutely correct in that they use the same 5,200 to 7,000 pound brakes. So with that being said, for just a magnet you will want the # AKBRKR-M12. If you haven't replaced a magnet before, take your time and DO NOT lose the little spring clip that hold them in place. They like to go flying and are nigh on impossible to find once they take flight. Also, inspect your shoes while the drum is off. Things rolling around inside the drum while moving can cause some damage. If this is the case, the # AKEBRK-7-SA self adjusting brakes would be a good choice as a replacement. It will come with a left and right brake so it will be enough for one axle, which we recommend doing so both brakes match on said axle.
