Why Are The Sides Of The A-Frame Trailer Coupler Angled Out Slightly?

Updated 06/02/2021 | Published 05/24/2021

Question:

On the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler w/ High-Profile Latch - 2inch Ball - A-Frame - 7,000 lbs Item # BD028386, why are the sides angled outwards a few degrees and not square to the top? At first I thought this was a defect, but I have now seen that several different manufacturers do the same thing. Do you have any guidance as to how best to weld into the 1/8 inch gap between the bottom of the side and the trailer frame?

Most square frame tubing will actually have a swelling in the steel that causes the frame to not be an exact rectangle. This is why you will see a bit of an angle on the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler # BD028386.

I suggest using a large clamp to pull the steel as close together as possible. Be careful that the clap does not distort the inside wall of the steel tubing as this will weaken the steel and possibly cause the angle to increase. The heat from the welding process will help to pull the material together as well.
