How Does the Bulldog High-Profile Latch Repair Kit Attach to the Trailer Coupler
Published 08/02/2011 >
Question:
Need information about Bulldog High-Profile Latch Repair Kit for Heavy-Duty Collar-Lok Couplers -Part No. BD024200. I recently purchased a boat trailer with a bulldog hitch. Before when I had to use the bulldog hitch there was a thumb release leaver to pull the collar back to release the hitch from the tow vehicle. On the boat trailer I purchased there isnt a way to release the collar except grasp the collar with both hands and pull back until the hitch splits from the ball. While surfing the internet I found your web sight with the above mentioned release for bulldog hitches. How does it attach to the hitch. The hitch I have is a class 3 hitch - with 5000# gross trailer weight - load at 2 ball of 750#. This hitch is on a 3x4 square tongue.

It sounds like you are used to using a Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler, like part # BD028288, and that your new coupler is the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler w/ Pin, # BD028244, which is designed to be used as you have indicated. You have to grasp the coupler and pull the collar back to release the jaw.
The Bulldog High-Profile Latch Repair Kit, # BD024200, is desingned to be used on the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler w/ High-Profile Latch, item # BD028382, which has an attachment point on the couplers frame and the collar for installation of the latch, see attached photo.
As I see it, you could have a qualified weldor fabricate a mount for the coupler frame and collar, or you could change out the coupler with the BD028382 latch coupler. Other than that you will have to wrestle with the collar each time you unhook the trailer.
