What is Best Replacement 175/D13 Trailer Tire: Loadstar ST175/D13, Part # AM31233, or Carlisle

Updated 03/23/2020 | Published 02/25/2013

Question:

Our trailer is fitted with two new Tires. One is the Loadstar ST 175/D 13 and the other is a Carlisle ST 175/80013 Sport Tread Replaces B78-13ST. Are these two Tires compatible? I need to buy a third Tire as a spare ....which is the better Tire, the Loadstar or the Carlisle?

Expert Reply:

All other things being equal, it is always preferable to have matching tires on your trailer. Different tire brands may have different tread depths and may wear at different rates due to variances in the formula used in their rubber compound. However, you can use the two different tires if you wish.

As we do not offer the Carlisle tires, I suggest you use a second Kenda Loadstar ST175/80D13, part # AM31233, and keep the Carlisle as your spare.

Hello. I have a single axle camping trailer. I am thinking of putting some heavier duty tires on it. I currently have ST175/80 D13 tires on it. I understand what the D means Bias Ply. Does the D13 mean that it is a 13 inch wheel? I measured the wheel and its exactly 14 inches in diameter. So how am I finding a discrepancy between the D13 and my actual measurement?

When measuring a wheel (in terms of its listed diameter - which would in fact be 13" for your tire size) you measure across the face of the wheel, NOT including the outer lips. I think you might be measuring the overall diameter, including the lips, which is what's giving you the larger measurement. You can be assured that you have 13" rims, if only because an ST175/80D13 tire wouldn't physically fit over a 14" wheel. If you let me know what Load Range your existing tires are (this will also be listed on the side wall) I will be happy to recommend a higher-rated unit within this same size. If you want to actually upgrade the tire and wheel size, just let me know and I can help with this as well.

Hi, Chris. Thanks for the reply above. The tires that I currently have are a 1,300 pound load range. I like the idea of a radial tire. Radials seem more durable for highway towing. The highways in the mountains here in Colorado are pretty unforgiving. Can you recommend a radial to replace my current tires, with the same 13 wheel setup?

I highly recommend the Kenda Karrier # AM10210, which will mount right to your existing wheels to provide you with a radial ply upgrade over your current bias tires. They will perform much better on those Colorado highways and have a really high 81 mph speed rating.
