Question:

Hello, I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 Diesel with an 8 ft. bed, and I was going to purchase the Huskey total 5th wheel package that included this install kit. Will there be an installation issue on my application? Does the Kit come with all the instructions for correct positioning, etc.? Maybe throw in your preference for my application. Thanks

The installation of the Husky Base Rail and Bracket Kit, # HT31413-686, for your 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 is pretty straight forward and the installation instructions are very detailed. Husky even included pictures and diagrams for different steps of the installation.

As long as you have some mechanical experience, you should not run into many issues when installing this kit. The only drilling required is in the truck bed for the base rail bolts. Husky does mention that it can be difficult on some models to mount the passenger side rear bracket due to the location of the exhaust hanger and spare tire heat shield. If you run into this issue, they have included an alternative installation recommendation. Please note that the alternative method does require you to temporarily lift the truck bed off of the frame.

If you would consider yourself a novice installer or do not have much mechanical experience, I would recommend setting aside more than the 2.5 hours that the instructions state. Husky says an experienced installer should be able to complete the installation in approximately 2.5 hours, but I would recommend giving yourself plenty of time if you are unfamiliar with this type of install.

As far as a recommendation is concerned. Most of the custom install kits for your truck use similar installation methods. Another Bracket and Base Rail kit that you may be interested in checking out is the Reese Custom Install Kit, # RP50140-58. This kit uses similar style brackets, but the base rails require 10 bolts to mount to the truck bed which means you will need to drill more holes. The Husky rails only require 4 bolts. The base rails included with both kits will support the same type of fifth wheel hitches.

I have attached a link to the installation instructions for the Reese Custom Install Kit for you to look over as well. The installation instructions for both fifth wheel installation kits are included in the box.
