Question:
I have a Shorelander pontoon trailer made in 2001 no. PT2440T. Is the 3x5 the inside of the tube. Will this work on my trailer?

The Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit, part # FHDPB350101, is intended for use on steel (but not aluminum) boat trailers that have a tongue size of 3 x 5 inches. Yes, this is the internal dimension of the two coupler halves. When installed the two halves of your trailer tongue will each slide into one half of the coupler.
I contacted Shorelandr and confirmed that your steel trailer PT2440T has a 3 x 5 tongue (about 78 inches in length); this will mate properly with the Fulton coupler. The video link provided illustrates these coupler measurements.
Please note that your maximum permissible pivot length will be determined by the gross trailer weight (the weight of the boat plus trailer along with all stored gear). Determine the weight of your boat and trailer combined and then select the appropriate pivot point from the chart on the product page (I have included a copy in this message).
A clean cut of the tongue will make mounting the coupler easier; try to avoid creating any rough edges on the cut that may make attaching the coupler halves more difficult. Each half attaches with 4 Torx bolts. Be sure to attach the inside bolts first (to allow easier access to the outer mounting bolts). The coupler can be installed either way, to enable the tongue to fold either left or right, as you prefer.
If your trailer has a surge brake coupler you will need to install a flexible brake line like the Titan Hydraulic 25-Inch Brake Line with Fittings, part # T0980100. This installs inline with the couplers master cylinder and the original brake line so the tongue can fold without damaging the braking system. This flexible brake line is furnished with 3/8 - 24 UNF male and female fittings on the ends of the brake line.
Since there may be wiring run inside the trailer tongue you will want to check first to be sure this is not damaged when you make your cut.
