Can 2 Bike Add-On Be Used With T2 Pro X for 1-1/4 Hitches?

Question:
I just want to confirm that this add on, TH55GC, will fit on to the T2 Pro X 1.25inch TH23GC. I am fully aware that its supposed to only be for the 2", TH83GC. But I believe that restriction is just due to weight ratings. The hitch installer I used claimed my 1.25inch receiver would support the same forces as a 2inch because it was beefed up.

Expert Reply:
The reason the 2 Bike Add-On # TH55GC is recommended only for the T2 Pro X for 2" Hitches # TH83GC is because of the differences between Class I, II, and III hitches. Class I 1-1/4" hitches can only hold up to 2 bikes. Not so much because of the weight capacity but more because of the angle and leverage issues of more than two bikes. The add-on is designed for the 2" version # TH83GC and not the 1-1/4" version # TH23GC to prevent people from accidentally loading their Class I hitch with more than 2 bikes.
Class II hitches can handle up to 4 bikes, so I recommend double-checking your hitch for what class it is and its weight capacity. If you have a Class II hitch and a sufficient tongue weight capacity, then you can use a hitch-mounted rack like the Hollywood Racks Traveler # HR8500. If not, then your best option would be a trunk rack like the Yakima FullBack 3-Bike Trunk Rack # Y02633 if you want to carry more than two bikes.
