Question:

Hi, I would like to know if the class 1 tow hitch is enough to pull a 300 lbs trailer with 2 motorcycles both weighing 409 lbs.

On your 2012 BMW Series 1 your only option is the Curt Class I 1-1/4 inch hitch # C11184 which has a max tongue weight of 200lbs and a max gross trailer rating of 2,000 lbs. So, you could potentially haul your two motorcycles on your trailer but there are some things we need to make sure of. First make sure that your vehicle can handle that weight. The hitch may be able to, but you need to confirm your vehicles limits. Usually you'll find it in your owners manual.

Then we need to make sure that your trailer and bikes don't succeed 2,000 lbs. I think we are good there. Now, we need to make sure we aren't going to have a tongue weight of more than 200lbs. This will be a little trickier but I have some things we can do. First, you'll need to get a trailer tongue weight scale # e99044.

I suggest loading your bikes up like normal, and then checking the tongue weight. If it's over 200lbs you will need to slide your bikes back until we get the desired tongue weight. You'll need a ball mount of course # C45015, a ball # 19256, wiring # 22551 and then a pin and clip # F-4.
