Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System Sway Control Not As Effective On New Travel Trailer

Updated 08/12/2020 | Published 08/10/2020

Question:

I have the 8K lb E2 hitch from my previous travel trailer. I just upgraded trailers and based on the numbers, the 8k should have been sufficient, but Im experiencing some sway now. It isnt horrible sway, but enough to be noticeable, especially with wind and passing trucks. Im wondering if upgrading to the 10K E2 would make much of a difference, and if so, Can I upgrade just the Trunion bars, or do I need a whole new set-up. My old trailer was 23ft had a dry weight of about 4500lbs and my new one 28ft and weighs 5400lbs, empty. My cargo load has not changed and I have everything loaded properly.

You could indeed swap out to higher capacity bars using part # FA92-01-1099. The Fastway e2 is a pretty effective system that provides the sway control at two points, where each spring bar contacts the trailer frame bracket. This system is pretty darn effective, but if the sides of the new travel trailer are larger than the old one and present more surface for the cross winds and traffic caused turbulence to act against, that would explain why the sway control performance of the system is less effective with your new travel trailer.

Before considering replacing the existing spring bars, I'd recommend first revisiting the setup process. Start over from scratch. If the ball height/ tilt of the weight distribution bars isn't correct, the spring bars might not be putting the proper amount of force to the brackets to restrict trailer sway.

I've linked to a video showing my buddy Randy setting up a Fastway e2 system.
