Differences Between Bias Ply and Radial Tire

Question:
What is a Bias tire?

Expert Reply:
There are two types of tires, a radial ply and bias ply tire. The difference lies in how the tire is constructed. The cords inside the tire are run in different directions. On a bias tire, the cords run at a 32 degree angle at a bias to the direction of travel. On a radial tire, the cords will run at 90 degrees or perpendicular to the direction of travel, across the tire.
Because of the way it is constructed, a radial tire will has more flex and will allow ground contact that is more even, which will improve traction and provides more stability.
The radial tire will normally run cooler if not overloaded, which will help the tire last longer, especially when the tire is under a load.
Bias ply tires will have a stiffer sidewall, which might make them better suited for off-road or agricultural use.
At one time, there was a large price differential between radial and bias ply tires, but that differential has shrunk quite a bit over the years, which is why we typically recommend radial tires if available in the size you are looking for.
