Question:

Does the Malone foam kayak block require strapping down to the cross bar on my Thule Xsporter rack or does the cut out hold it in place? Thanks

The Malone Foam Kayak Block for Truck Racks part # MPG159 is a big favorite for a lot f customers trying to do exactly what you are doing. They are large enough to fit around the larger crossbars that the Xporter has rather than most of the others for regular crossbars.

To hold them n if your don't have a good way yet use the etrailer Cam Buckle Cinch Straps w/ Buckle Protectors part # E98876-4 this is a 4 pack of straps that have buckle protectors to keep the hulls looking good and keeprs to secure the excess in so it doesn't flap around

When loaded with the kayaks they will not need to be strapped down the weight of the kayaks will hold them in place as well as the cut out you mentioned. When not in use I definitely recommend removing them and storing them in a secure area. They would likely hold on at low speeds under 10 mph but I sure wouldn't trust them any higher than that.
