Replacing Safety Chain Loops on Trailer That Broke Off

Updated 01/26/2025 | Published 01/01/2020

Question:

Hello, Our 2018 Grand Design Reflection 312BHTS had the safety chain attachment loop on the tongue break off. What are some alternatives to attach safety chains to the trailer tongue? Im not too experienced in attaching parts to the trailer frames, so I will probably seek professional help if it has to be welded... Thank you! Happy new year!

Happy new year to you as well!

The best way to replace (or add new) safety chain loops to your trailer frame is to simply have new ones like the Brophy # MB38 welded on. There's really not another good method for doing this that will ensure safe operation in the event of a breakaway situation.

You can then add some Quick Links like # C82932 (if you don't already have them) to the loops that will hook up to your safety chains.

I have attached a short video review on the Safety Chain Mounting Brackets below that you can also check out.

Won't welding the chains on weaken the metal?

@Christian No, if properly done, welding on new brackets for the chains won't negatively affect anything.

Would you recommend the Brophy #MB38 over the retainer 3375471001? Why would you recommend one over the other? Do you have any other products to consider? I have a 2001 Forest river, trail-lite by R-vision B23S. About 5k lbs loaded. I haven’t had it long . The safety chains are currently secured by a 3/8” bolt. It doesn’t look safe or secure.

@AaronS Hey Aaron, I actually wouldn't. Both of them will do the job but I do actually like the Brophy # 3375471001 a bit better simply because the clevis pin design lets you change out the chains if you ever need to without breaking off the retainer and welding a new one on.
