Question:
Cant determine if my 2016 Mazda cx5 is just a 2016 or a 2016.5. Will this matter for the hitch

The installation process will vary slightly depending on whether you have the 2016 or the mid-year 2016.5 model Mazda CX-5 but the available trailer hitches themselves will not change.
For whichever model 2016 CX-5 you have the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Trailer Hitch # 76138 that you were looking at will work perfectly. I really like this hitch because of its hidden crosstube design that allows for a sleek OEM appearance where only the 2 inch receiver is visible behind the vehicle. It has a robust 4,500 pound towing weight capacity and a 675 pound tongue weight limit.
I have attached an installation video that you can use for reference. The 2016.5 model CX-5 features an additional underbody trim piece that just needs to be removed during the install. This is the only difference between the two models.
If you are still curious as to which model you have your best route will be to simply give your local Mazda dealer a call with your VIN ready. With this info they should be able to tell you exactly when your vehicle was made, thus whether or not it's the mid-year model.
