Installing Trailer Hitch on 1995 GMC Conversion Van with Aftermarket Bumper

Question:

I have a 95 GMC G20 conversion van. It does not have the factory bumpers on the van. I do not think it has the bolts for the rear bumper where the hitch ties into the bumper. I see all three offerings have bolt holes for the hitch to tie to the bumper. Do I have to use them? Is there anyway I can get around not using them, other then drill new holes in my bumper?

The custom trailer hitches we have available for your 1995 GMC G20 Van, such as the Curt Class III # C13016 that you were looking at, do indeed feature pre-drilled holes that are designed to line up to existing holes in the van's frame rails and bumper.

If your van doesn't have the existing bumper bolts and nuts that are used to secure the front of the hitch you will need to drill into it (and obtain the necessary hardware) to make this connection. I really can't recommend passing this step altogether as this will essentially reduce the hitch's weight capacity to an unknown number. The listed weight ratings for the hitch (6,000 pounds towing and 600 pounds tongue weight) were determined with all the hardware attached so leaving off the front bumper hardware could lead to it being overloaded and damaged as a result.

Another option is with a more universal hitch like the Curt Adjustable Class III Trailer Hitch # C13701. This unit will fit frame widths of 18 to 51 inches and can be either bolted to the frame or welded on for a no-drill application. This will give you a bit more adjustability when it comes to its mounting location to make sure the receiver doesn't end up tucked too far behind the aftermarket bumper on the van.
