I went out to the warehouse and pulled a Trailer Coupler Grip Handle, # DL13350, to inspect the handle. The handle is plastic. It is hollow inside . It cannot be pushed around the bend in the handle, so it cannot come off that way. On the other end there is a metal lip integrated into the metal part of the handle. The inside of the plastic handle has ribs that run the length of the handle. These ribs stick down further and cannot be pushed beyond the lip.
Another option is the Fulton handle, # FCH0201. This handle has a molded plastic piece that is formed to the metal of the handle and is held on by friction. It is a better design and what I would go with if I where choosing a handle.
