Will Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution Work on R-Pod Trailer With 300 lb to 400 lb Tongue Weight

Updated 06/13/2019 | Published 06/12/2019

Question:

I have an r-pod that weighs between 2700 and 3400 lbs with a tongue weight of 300-400 lbs. Will the Curt 17499 hitch work with this setup. The tow vehicle has a maximum tow capacity of 3500 lbs and needs a WD hitch when over 2000 lbs. I like the features of the Curt hitches and this seems to be the lightest that they make.

To choose the best weight distribution system what you need to know is your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go R-Pod plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. The ideal system would be one in which your TTW falls somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity.

Since you mentioned you have a tongue weight of between 300 lbs and 400 lbs, if you had 150 lbs or so of cargo behind your tow vehicle's axle, the Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # C17499 would be a great option because it has a tongue weight capacity between 500 lbs and 800 lbs. For this you would need a hitch ball, the 2" Hitch Ball # A-90.

If you TTW was in fact between 300 lbs and 400 lbs there is another I option I recommend, the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control # EQ37060ET which has a tongue weight capacity between 200 lbs and 600 lbs which is perfect for a 300 lb to 400 lb TTW.

Our customers who have used the Equal-i-zer regard it very highly; with over 400 reviews it has averaged nearly 5 out of 5 stars, as you can see on the product page. This system comes with everything you need for installation though it is recommended you use thin-walled socket # EQ70-00-4800 to help install the hitch ball.

I've added links to video reviews of both systems for you to check out.
