For your 2001 VW Beetle, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # C11066 is the correct fit as long as you don't have the Turbo. There is not a fit for the Turbo model. If you are using this hitch for a bike rack or cargo carrier you will also need stabilization strap # 18050.

If you don't want to be required by warranty to use that strap, then you can instead use the Draw-Tite # 24679.

If you will be doing light towing, I recommend the Upgraded Circuit Protected Tail Light Converter Hardwire Kit w/ 4-Pole Connector and Circuit Tester # 119178KIT for your trailer wiring connection and then ball mount # 3593. For a hitch ball use # 19256 for 1-7/8 inch diameter or # 19258 for 2 inch diameter.
