Question:

I am updating a tandem axle trailer from slipper springs to double eye springs. it has 3inch axle tubes with axle spacing of 35inch the leaf springs are 26 3/4inch long. the springs are over the axles with 4inch of clearance from the frame. the springs are 1 3/4 wide. from the bottom of the frame to center of axle is 7inch I have 14.5 inch wheels with plenty of tire clearance. the trailer is balanced with very little tongue weight. I would like a 8k to 10k total gross trailer capacity. do you have a suggestion on what springs and hanger kit I would need.

The hanger kit I recommend is part # APT3HD which includes front, center and rear hangers, equalizers and bolts. This kit is good for axles up to a 7K rating and most 3-inch diameter axles are rated for 6000 to 7200-lbs. The linked video will let you see the kit contents. Please note the kit does not include parts to mount the axle to the suspension; for that use # APUBR-8, one kit per axle.

For double-eye leaf springs please refer to the linked page that displays all 6K rated springs which range in length from 25-1/8-inches to 26-inches measured eye to eye. The 26-inch spring is part # e94SR.

The hangers will be welded into their final positions after you first mock-up the whole suspension setup to ensure all clearances are good for the normal vertical suspension travel which is around 3-inches and for spacing between tires. I linked a helpful article on double-eye trailer suspensions that may be helpful to you as a reference.

You will want position the axles so that the trailer's loaded tongue weight (TW) falls in the ideal 10- to 15-percent range. Too little TW can lead to sway issues. A trailer that it too heavy at its rear end can tend to sway back and forth like a clock pendulum.
