What does the code SC or CS mean on the impulse trailer brake control?

The error code SC means that the Impulse brake controller has detected a short circuit. To the best of my knowlege, there is not a CS error code on Hopkins brake controllers.
You should check the brake controller connection under the dash to be sure it is wired correctly. The red wire should be inserted into slot A for 1999-2002 GM trucks or slot D for 2003 to 2006, and 2007 Classic body, GM trucks.
If you do not have a Chevrolet truck, or the pin is inserted in the correct position for your specific truck, then you will need to test the wires at the back of the brake controller for proper input and output. The red wire should only have power when the brake pedal is pressed, the black wire should have constant 12 volt power, the white wire should be properly grounded and the blue wire should have output when the brake controller is activated. If the inputs are correct, and the brake controller is still showing the SC code, the short is most likely at the trailer connectors or on the trailer itself. If the SC code is staying on when the trailer is not connected to the vehicle, check the vehicle side connector for proper wiring or corrosion in the connector. Corrosion can bridge the gap between circuits and cause a short. I have linked an article that has diagrams of the correct wiring for trailer connectors.
If the SC code appears when the trailer is connected then you will need to check the trailer side connector and the wiring to the trailer brakes.
If the short is still not found,check for a shorted brake magnet. You can visually check the brake magnet for wear. If windings are showing or abnormal wear is discovered, the magnet will need to be replaced. If the brake magnet looks good then you can test the magnet for a short. Remove the magnet, place the base of the magnet against a 12 volt battery negative post, now use a multi-meter, # BTMT15, inline with each wire, one at a time, on the brake magnet and the battery positive post. If the meter shows voltage, your brake magnet is shorted and will need to be replaced. Check all brake magnets on the trailer.
Another way to check the trailer is to connect it to another vehicle with a known working brake controller. If the trailer brakes function normally with this vehicle, you should check your vehicle wiring closely.
Finally, if a short is not found the brake controller most likely has an internal malfunction and will need to be replaced.
