How to Combat Side-to-Side Wobble with the Swagman XTC # S64670 Bike Rack

Question:

Your recommendation for the strap on these racks addresses front to back wobble, but mine is side to side play...any ideas on that?

Attached is a video of us going over our test course with the Swagman XTC # S64670 installed on a vehicle. If your XC has more play in it than what you see in the video (which shows normal movement) then I would make sure that you have the anti-rattle bolt installed correctly.

If you have that much play then the only solution that really exists would be to use 2 of the straps # 18050 that you referenced. By connecting them from a wheel hoop on either side of the bike rack and then to the safety chain loops on your trailer hitch you should see less side-to-side play.

We do have some other bike racks that have anti-wobble systems which are a little more effective, but none of them will completely take out all of the wobble that you see, especially if you are going over bumps.

Oh my goodness, I’ve had this rack for years, and I have always threaded it from the driver side to the passenger side and have immense lateral wobble. I just read where if you put the threaded screw in from the passenger side to the driver side it greatly reduced the wobble . It really worked. It REALLY WORKED!! So threaded from passenger side over to driver side.
