Brake Assemblies and Hub for 1975 Airstream Camper

Updated 07/30/2018 | Published 07/28/2018

Question:

I have a 1975 airstream Argosy 26foot camper with OEM dexter axles. I believe it has 10x 2 1/4inch brakes, it has 4 bolts on backing plate. Looking to replace brake backing plate and drum assembly. During a recent bearing repack, one lug bolt hole stripped out on drum. Curious if part #23-468 new-r-adjust assembly and this drum will fit/work? How to know if I have a #84 spindle? thanks

There is a way to find out what replacement hub and drum you need; first, you need to know the weight rating of your axle, and also what bearings your current hub has. You will need to take apart your current hub assembly and look at the bearings themselves; wipe away the grease and you should be able to see the part number stamped directly on them. If you are unable to find them, you need to use a digital caliper and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearings and grease seal ride. You can use the photo I've attached to see exactly where you need to measure.

Additionally, you need to know your hub's wheel bolt pattern; if you do not know what it is I have added a help article which details how you can find it.

The Dexter Electric Brake Kit # 23-468-469 you referenced is rated for 3,500 lb axles, is 10" diameter x 2-1/4" wide and fits in a drum of that size; it will require you have a 4-bolt mounting flange that has bolt hole distances which are 2-7/8" apart on center.
